Alain Barthelemy’s Woven Stonefly – December 2009 TPO Fly of the Month

As a swan song tribute to the late great contributor to TPO alanb_ct, we present one of our favorite of his inventions. This stonefly is simple yet deadly and can be used for a variety of anchor type applications in Euro Nymphing rigs. Enjoy it and much praise and credit thrown towards our old friend Alain.

I think the dronestone is more effective but doesn’t have? the same sink rate. I have a row of rubberlegs row of dronestones and a row of these with rubber tails in my box. And they all fish very well!
Good video with and even better fly.

I love all your videos. They really help me a lot. I’m an entomologist, so I like the detail in this one. Not meant to criticize, but you didn’t put on a wingcase and legs, but (based on the list of materials at the beginning) looks like it is pheasant tail. Also, for any other tiers? out there who are all thumbs, I find it easier to tie this right-side up rather than flip it like you did. But the bobbin trick really helps. Thanks for a great pattern!

Thanks for this! I was trying to adapt a woolly bugger to a newt pattern. By weaving brown and orange and using orange and brown deer hair for the head? with a couple of rubber legs, the pattern came out pretty good! I appreciate your time in doing these videos.

Fair enough. No worries buddy. Just don’t like the haters on youtube that surf around looking for people to insult. I’m glad? you like everything, enjoy the flies.

yes you are correct. I did use your improperly. Sorry it wasn’t supposed to be directed at you anyways. There was a comment on here about your weaving not being perfect. That is whom i was speaking towards. I think your videos? are great and very useful for people. You tie fish catching patterns and not fisherman catching patterns. Keep up the great work and Tight Ties. Sorry for the mix up.
