Daniel W. Galhardo, founder of Tenkara USA and Masaki Nakano go tenkara fly-fishing in the Sierra Nevada. Tenkara is the traditional Japanese method of fly-fishing, ideal for mountain streams. In tenkara one uses only a rod, line and fly, no reel is needed for stream fishing. Originally it was practiced by commercial/professional fishermen in the mountain streams of Japan, who used to catch fish for a living.

Very nice. However, I shall be sticking to my 5? foot rod and tiny dries as the big Lune brownies and sea trout tend to keep running hard, meaning the extra reassurance of a fly reel is comforting. Plus the danger of hooking a salmon is ever-present too…

Levwood, the rod does a very good job at? working as the “drag”. Please lookup “big fish tenkara” here on youtube for an idea.

Sorry but i watched the video again and that’s great. but what about accuracy and timing? I don’t know how much line is on one of these “telescoping” poles as we’ll call it but what if a beautiful brown is rising or eating scuds 2 feet put of range? Are you going to move through the riffle and create a massive disturbance and not hook the fish. Having a reel allows you to cast to? a rising fish right in front of you or 60 feet in front of you. Grab a real fly rod and fish efficiently folks.
cool video, but as an avid fly fisherman for both trout and lake run species i really appreciate having a reel. i fish many small streams that are less than 6 feet wide and I? still make long cast and appreciate having a reel to get line in and properly land and release a fish. no offense to tenkara but I will always believe in having a reel for fishing. you cant drive a car if it has no wheels. check and mate.
