Although I now am past the beginners stage in fly tying I do still occasionally pull up one or the other of your instructional tying videos. Originally I watched them to acquire some of the foundations for tying. Now I find them extremely relaxing despite of the great puzzle of your finishing knots. The manual whip finishing at one time was also a bit of a problem for me, but your finishing knots will probably remain unsolveable forever for me.

I am returning to fly tying after many years away from it. I was crap at it before!. What I am really gettin gfrom this series of videos is not “how to tie a pattern” which is useful – but you can get that from a book, its the technique- watching how Dave tears off a bit of hackle for instance. Mines always fell to bits until i watched these vids. Watch his fingers. What a difference it makes.
@soundiscomforting Its varnish he uses to secue the knot at the head of the fly.
what is the purpose of the liquid he adds in the end? Some kind of glue? Thanks
Hi. I just got a new fly tying starter kit and the bobbin holder is too tight. The tension is WAY too hight. I have to break the line to get some out. As far as i can see there is no way to loosen it. Any sugguestions?

Thankyou for the lesson. I am just a teenager fresh out of highschool but a few years ago out of bordom i stated tying flies and it became a quick passion for me. I have flyfishing equiptment but cant cast to save my life. So i sell my flies and troll with them. Since watching this video moments ago i realised what that little unlabeled bottle of fluid and my bodkin was for. Now my flies wont come undone as easily. And now i can use a half hitch knot as well. Mostly i use a whip finisher.
Thank so much i have only just started to fly fish but i can put a decent cast togeather now.After watching the clip that you did about the gold head nymph i caught my first grayling and wild browny on it.It give’s you a real buzz knowing that you have tricked a wild fish that has never seen a rearing pen on something that you tied your self thanks again.Mr m.p.ellis
Are you sure you don’t need eye protection when using that UV light? I don’t mena to be an alarmist, but many such lights use wavelengths which can damage the retina!

If you tie the weight on top of the hook, the fly will turn over when presented. With this pattern you are presenting the scud upside down,

Don’t get me wrong, I love heavy ass flies. Especially exploring patterns like scuds. But an ultraviolet light and epoxy out of giant syringe seems like a pain. Haha. Kinda takes the romanticism out of naturals. But hey, I’m guilty of loading on the flash 9 times outa 10.

what brand of rotary vise is that it looks kinda nice
Rainy’s makes a scud out of stretch tubing and they are great. The trick is keeping the spacing even enough to be able to pick the dubbing out. The other great advantage of this scud is its weight.
