Fishing with Rod: Drifting & fly fishing on the Elk

For more fishing videos, please visit: www.fishingwithrod.com The Elk River system in the Southeastern corner of British Columbia is a fantastic destination for fly fishing. Your target species are westslope cutthroat trout, bull trout and mountain whitefish. Last summer, we had the opportunity to drift down this beautiful stream with our Outcast Power Drifters and catch some trout on our dry flies. 3wt, 3 weight or #3 is the number system used for fly fishing setup. The higher the number is, the heavier the setup is. A typical trout setup is 4 or 5wt. 3wt is pretty light and is only ideal for small stream? trout up to a couple of lbs. 6wt+ are ideal for salmon and larger species.

  7. sodazv06 says:

Sorry but what does 3wt? mean? And are you using thinner line? Thanks!

The fly rod in the second part of this video is indeed a pretty light and short setup. It’s a? fairly expensive rod but you can find rods with similar specs at a much cheaper price as well. It’s a 3wt rod, length is 7’10”, very good for small stream fly fishing.

Is that like a small fly rod with light line and stuff? I have no idea, I’m new to fly fishing and? I have a lot of those small creeks in my area but my current rod is too long. What size is your rod and setup and such?

Do a search on our channel for a video called “Float fishing with a fly”? and that should answer your question. 🙂

Hello, how long does it normally take to? get a bite? and how fast do you want set the hook? Like immediately?

  19. Kremlin60 says:

It’s still pretty clear to me, about two to three? feet. Even clearer when the tide is coming in, doesn’t stir up the silt that gets deposited on the rocks on the outgoing tide.

  20. fishingwithrod says:

Very nice. The river looks pretty coloured up. What’s the? clarity?

  21. Kremlin60 says:
