Beginner Fly Tying Tips – Part 2: Three Essential Techniques Every Fly Tier Needs to Know

Part two in a series of video segments designed to teach the beginning fly tier the skills needed to tie basic flies. There are three fly tying skills that you will use with every fly you tie – the jam knot, the pinch wrap, and the whip finish knot. They correspond to the three essential operations needed to complete all flies – attaching the thread to the hook (the jam knot), attaching material to the hook (the pinch wrap), and securing and removing the thread from the hook upon completion of the fly (the whip finish.) This video teaches you how to perform these three essential techniques. Video supplement to the beginning fly tying class of the Brodheads chapter of Trout Unlimited. Instruction by Scott Cesari.

Thanks for the kind words! I’ve found most of the kits available have the basics you need to get started,? I can’t say that I’d recommend one over another. If you’re following this series specifically, I do have a DVD available that contains a comprehensive list of all the materials needed to tie the flies in the series, you can see more details about it at my website (scottcesariflytying.) Hope that answers your question, feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. Thanks again!
