Beautiful Brookies. I grew up in a corner of CT where we had some amazing brook trout. I have not found anything that compared yet. (I haven’t fished for trout in Maine yet ) My friend and I had our first taste of landlocks on flies last weekend on the Saranac in NY. It was quite an experience catching salmon on flies we tied the night before. Thanks for your film and background music. It warmed my heart and reminded me of some great times with friends. Thank you.

It is the orthdox way but if it works for you and you get nice smooth casts and all anything goes

ive never had problems with that i always cast with my arm way out

  10. El135o says:

I’ve heard of casting instructors who place a $50 bill under a student’s arm to teach him to keep his casting arm close in. If you have your arm too far out, the $50 drops in to the stream … you’ll see what I mean at 1:07.

very nice video…dragging the fish over the rocks like that…not so nice. just as well u used a gaff.

These fish are great eating. You know how much they cost at your local grocery store in Ontario, Canada? Friggin expensive. If I caught that, I would have brought it home and eat it.

Very nice fish! Great footage and that one will live on for many more miles of river. Very nice!!!

    @zircon215
I didn’t know that grabbing a fish by the tail instantly paralyzes it. This is good information.
Whats your method of handling fish then??? Let me guess, you are a gill grabber??

  17. classicskid10 says:

You let it go….. good for you. Most Americans don’t do that. I always feel sorry for fish who are that big and taken home to eat.

@Bluebeltonproduction I’m not talking about beaching it as in dragging the fish over dry rocks, but tipping it on it’s side in the shallows is far batter than playing it to near exhaustion to be able to tail it, or better yet scooping it up in a nylon net nets full of knots. Anyone who thinks the salmon lying on its side in the shallows is harmful should come to the Bonaventure and watch them spawn sometime, impressive.

  19. Bluebeltonproduction says:

@gaspeflyfisher You just remove 1/3 of the fish’s scales and mucus in the process of beaching it – opening the door to a plethora of diseases and viruses.

great capture and footage.some controversy over the release technique but i say for myself nice catch ,good release that fish will live on to either get bigger and get taken again and again i hope.

This is the Grand Cascapedia river on the Gaspe Coast in Qc. Hennrick’s landing technique is quite controversial, I use it and can say having done both (tailing by hand and putting it on its side in the shallows) the fish can be landed much sooner using his technique and you dont have to play the fish as long and thus stress it as much.

@nfldclay This is from the movie “the scandinavian speycast” with henrik mortensen. Dont remember exaclty what river he is fishing in this clip, but it is one of the top Tier rivers in Canada. costs a fortune to fish there i guess 🙂

  25. nfldclay says:

    What river is this?

  26. castabroadnz says:

Fantastic video! Despite all that was said below by a certain viewer, most importantly that fish is still in the river today providing our sport for many generations to come. I doth my cap to that man. Well fought and thats the beauty of salmon, who knows what side of a rock they have in mind. Was it a stoats tail?

  27. flyfishingmichigan says:

Henryk did nothing wrong, except hold the fish out of the water too long,Drag it up on its side on jagged rock( should have got it into shallows to tail it-but not drag it on its side0 Tailing does not hurst a fish with your hands- I don’t know where th idiot before stated such- gaffs and tailing metal loops do hurt the fish1
Was this Newfoundland?……hmmm!- also he revived it just barely in silted water with no flow- not good for an already stressed out fish-otherwise all jealousy!

I was like oh cool.. wait!… What?!?! he is putting fish back??

Great, inspiring video. I have my first ever Atlantic Salmon trip scheduled for next spring. Watching this I wish it were next week! But one question – I caught an 18 lb Steelhead a few years back (actually weighed) and this Salmon seems much larger. Closer to 30#?

  31. 007fishfingers says:

thanks great video and love to see them go back,

  32. mariohacker1100 says:

  33. everest001 says:

Wonderful film. Beautiful. Heart-stopping when the fish leaps at 2.50 or so. Thanks for posting.
